General Overview

Kern Council of Governments names its shape file directories based on a modified Spatial Data Standard (SDS) developed by the CADD/GIS Technology Center.

http://tsc.wes.army.mil/

SDS uses a hierarchy of directories to classify data by type. The broadest classifications are called entity sets. Some examples of entity sets are cadastre, hydrology, and transportation. From this level, each entity set is broken down into entity classes. Some examples of entity classes are transportation_air, transportation_railroad, and transportation_vehicle. Entity classes are further divided into specific types of data. For example, the transportation_vehicle entity class contains entity types such as road centerline, road segment, and parking lot.

Once data is placed in an entity type and becomes an entity, a special naming convention is used. The entity's name references the entire directory structure that it is a part of. For example, a road centerline data set would be named trvehrcl. The "tr" refers to the transportation entity set, the "veh" refers to the transportation_vehicle entity class, and the "rcl" refers to the road centerline entity type. Further modifiers can be added to the entity name to distinguish different data sets of similar types. The modifiers are not part of the SDS standard, but Kern COG has found them helpful.

e.g. trvehrcl_kco_strt_cnst_ctrns_99

trvehrcl = SDS entity type name for ArcView/ArcInfo
_kco = real world location of data (Kern County)
_ strt = modifier describing data (state route) - optional
_cnst = secondary modifier (under construction) - optional
_ctrns = source of data (Cal Trans)
_99 = year of data - if known
