Source data spacing was 3-arc seconds, projected and resampled to 75 meters, and later resampled again to 100 meters. The data can be used for analytical or cartographic purposes. 1-degree by 1-degree lattices were acquired directly from the USGS. The lattices were converted to grid format, mosaicked, projected, and resampled. Projecting and resampling were performed using bilinear interpolation, which is appropriate for continuous data surfaces such as elevation. Relief shading was performed with the ARC/INFO HILLSHADE command using the following parameters: Sun Azimuth = 315 degrees, Sun Altitude = 40 degrees, Z Factor = 2. State border clipping was performed using a outline version of the Teale Data Center "county" coverage (equivalent to USGS 1:100,000 digital line graph). A two-iteration low-pass filter was also applied to the data in an attempt to smooth anomolous elevation values. Other aesthetic editing was performed to eliminate tiling marks from grids that did not edgematch well. Some areas may contain erroneous data and/or exhibit striping or banding patterns. It is important to remember that the dataset is a model, with certain inaccuracies implied. The California Department of Fish and Game makes no warranty as to the suitability of this dataset and any derivative datasets for any purpose. The TIFF image versions of hil100m were created by appropriately reclassifying NODATA grid values to a valid number in the grid attribute table. These reclassified grids were then converted to pack-bit compressed TIFF images. The world files (.tfw) must remain with and retain the same root name as each associated image file (.tif). VIEWING TIPS: Image (.tif): The TIFF image versions can be viewed with various GIS and image viewing software programs. In some GIS software programs (such as ArcView 3.x and ArcMap), in order to edgematch/mosaic side-by-side images, you must change the 255 value colormap or color index assignment from white to transparent. In ArcView 3.x this can be performed via the image legend editor - colormap dialog. Grid as an image: The grid version can be viewed with some GIS software programs as an image. Some ESRI GIS programs allow you to view the grid with a predefined color ramp (the .clr file provides this automatically; it must remain in the same workspace and retain the same root name as the grid). In ArcView 3.x, the NODATA value color assignment can be made transparent from the image legend editor - colormap dialog. Grid as a grid: The grid versions can be viewed and queried using raster assessment software such as ESRI's Spatial Analyst or Grid extensions.
